Jessica A. Rayhanabad
M.D.
I graduated from Marina High School prior to studying biology and psychology as an undergraduate at UC Irvine. I received my medical degree from Chicago Medical School. I spent my five-year residency at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, followed by a post-residency fellowship at Hoag Hospital with Dr. Melvin Silverstein, a professor at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine and a renowned breast surgeon. I originally planned to become a lawyer, but working in free clinics in Mexico and Orange County convinced me to become a doctor. After switching to medicine from my original goal of lawyering, I thought that I would practice family medicine. However, a rotation in a trauma center introduced me to surgery, and a particularly traumatic aortic transection won me over to the specialty. I decided to pursue a medical specialty that allowed a regular operating schedule and that is why I picked surgical oncology.
